ABOUT

Marco Neri does not believe in reality anymore.

He believes in art.

His spiritual-magical thinking has taken him to explore far beyond the musical scores to deep into a unique musical approach.

He seeks to motivate all to enjoy the ecstasy of sound.

Bio — Composer | Sound Artist

I am sound creator, producer, and mentor Mexico-born based in Canada. My work explores sound from an interdisciplinary perspective, often combining performers' physical gestures with the acoustic and spatial impact of their movements. This approach frequently results in hybrid performances that merge staging, live projection, and sonic experimentation, allowing me to explore conceptual ideas through movement and sound.

I'm particularly interested in offering alternatives to traditional concert music formats. My work aims to engage curious audiences who are open to new sonic experiences, including those unfamiliar with contemporary music. I seek to connect with emerging new music listeners, interdisciplinary artists, and younger generations through immersive, exploratory performances that bridge individuality, sound, and technology.

My musical journey began in childhood when I studied piano before expanding into drums, flute, guitars, and synthesizers. Over the years, I've collaborated with contemporary dance companies as a composer, touring internationally across Europe and Latin America. I've also created music for theatre, avant-garde performances, and film and have recently begun exploring sound installations.

I specialize in sound creation using computer programs such as Max MSP, Unity, in combination with movement interfaces like Arduino, Mugic sensors, and movement tracking systems. This allows me to integrate a performer's physical gestures into sound generation and visuals control, developing a unique approach to concert music and performance.

In 2016, I founded a music label, Ajusco Recording Studio, where I have produced and released over 50 concert music recordings by emerging and established musicians. I also co-founded the Onepanko Youth Orquestra, where I worked as a composer, producer, and conductor.

Through all of these projects, I aim to bridge artistic disciplines and foster meaningful connections with diverse audiences and communities. Living in Canada has shaped my approach to collaboration and experimentation, offering access to a wide vision of cultural perspectives, community, and diversity.

Automaton-Music

Apr. 28 2022 - 5:00pm (EST)

This piece examines the association between movement and sound through the concepts of counterpoint and control.

Counterpoint unites the temporal aspect of music with movement. It is a route to witness the transformations of an entity, whether visual or acoustic, over time. One of the performers plays an acoustic violin, and the other makes the actions of playing the violin without the instrument.

This second performer holds a wireless device called Mugic connected to a computer that triggers and manipulates the electronic sounds.

Mugic is an interface that translates movement into computer language.

¿Aún escuchas mi voz? (Premiere)

Feb. 3 2022 - 6:30pm (EST)

This sound score uses a Cardenche song, originally from Durango, found among the archives of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH). This song is performed by a male a cappella trio. Cardenche is the name of a local cactus whose spines are incredibly painful to extract.

Latent encounters (Premiere)

Jul. 2 2021 - 2:30pm (EDT)

Collaboration with: Justin Massey, Trevor Van de Velde, Akari Komura, and Mathieu Soucy.

Latency (noun): the state of existing but not yet being developed or manifest; concealment. This work has emerged from approaching the idea of latency not only in the digital sphere but also in its original interpretation related to physical condition. In fact, the original definition deeply connects with the progression of this pandemic since latency is defined as the state of a disease not yet manifesting the usual symptoms.

These ideas prompted our creative process in composing scores that embrace asynchronicity of sound instead of striving for low latency solutions. Then, it led us to build an original instrument and a routing system that involves a collective Zoom call where each player is sending an individual input into an online browser audio broadcast system “Cleanfeed” to be processed through a randomly generated delay on MAX/MSP patch. During the live recording session, these MAX patch-generated delays were purposely not fed back into the Zoom call because we wanted to capture the idea of latency into the overall creative process where something is not yet being manifested but concealed.

Latent Encounters

Gotas de Rocío (Premiere)

Mar. 11 2021 - 6:30pm (CST)

The company Fisura arte escénico, created by the choreographer Brenda Gutiérrez, will premiere "Gotas de Rocío," for which I was invited to compose the music.

Since its choreographic creation, it is a work that sought to reflect on our identity and the search for balance between everything that surrounds us and what makes us up as people. It was challenging to compose the music under this reflection, but it is very worth seeing this work.

Gotas de Rocío Performance

if (on); update (off); (Premiere)

Mar. 5 2021 - 7:30pm (PST)

This work is a micro-game for a single performer. The game aspect in this piece coincides with the video games' three main characteristics: a platform, an interface, and a goal. Micro refers to the short timing of the gaming experience, and the game's events occur on a single level.

The goal is to move around the virtual map, find twelve yellow cubes and touch them to make them disappear in a time limit of six minutes. The music composition is the result of combining the sounds of the performer interacting within the virtual space and the music coming from the application.

Kaleidoscope (Premiere)

Dec. 8 2020 - 7pm (CST)

Next Dic. 8th, at 7 pm (CST), Fabián Campuzano will premiere "Kaleidoscope," for tuba and electronics, within the II Contemporary Expressions Festival framework, Puebla, México.

This work was composed in homage to Ray Bradbury, based on his short story "Kaleidoscope" where a crew of astronauts are expelled from the ship due to a collision with something unknown. The entire team floats uncontrollably and with their oxygen reserves, they contemplate the beauty of the universe until they meet their inevitable death.

Persona

Mixed Media (2025)

Persona is an experimental performance that views singing as a way to figure out who we are in the world, emphasising the human body as a direct source of sound and identity. Instead of playing a character, the performer has to face the raw sensations of their own body, dealing with physical intensity in real-time. The score is a series of nearly impossible physical instructions that make the piece less about being "perfect" and more about the honest struggle to keep going, revealing a voice that is unique rather than just a practiced technique.

To make this happen, I built a digital environment where even tiny facial movements are magnified. A custom tracking system using JavaScript Node System and WebSockets watches the performer's face to detect expressions like sadness or happiness. These expressions then trigger and warp live audio inside Max MSP, while Unity generates a digital mask that reacts and changes on screen in sync with the performer's movements.

Persona was premiered by Heather Byford on November 2, 2025, at the Phillip T Young at the University of Victoria.

if (on); update (off);

Micro-game Sound Composition (2021)

"if (on); update (off);" is a Micro-game Sound Composition for solo instrument.

The game's goal is to find and silence twelve speakers that are distributed around the stage before time runs out. The musical composition results from the actions of approaching and silencing speakers taken by the player.

This work was composed as part of the Master's degree in composition at the University of Victoria, B.C. Canada.
